EXPLORING A HYPOTHETICAL PLANET EARTH INFLUENCED BY A DYSTOPIAN UTOPIAN,

CELL DISINTEGRATION + HYBRIDITY THROUGH CASTING.

 

[The study of the multiple as narrative.. duplicating fingers.. ears.. teeth.. plaster and porcelain pieces through a collection of hybridised objects.]

Imagine a world where, biology was trapped inside an ecological, genetic blender, genetic mutations were the state of being, cell multiplication and a hybridity of over populated cells and underpopulated cells manifest within the human, fauna and flora kingdom. 

My research and aestheticism of image based study, is based on what an immortalised cell would look like. Hypothetically exploring this living cell inhabiting the shell of the deceased mortal with deadened genes. A crystallised / immortalised hybrid human. 

If human’s acquired an immortalised cell line, exempt from genetic corruptions like the contagious desire to self-destruct, death would be a genetic disease, and immortality would be the way of life. 

Chromosomal abnormalities resulting in duplication or mutation of cell DNA. This means a portion of the chromosome is duplicated - manifesting in excess genetic material. Resulting aesthetically in two genetically identical daughter nuclei. Producing more daughter cells is a mitotic error called multipolar mitosis (direct cell multiplication)

Chromosome anomalies usually occur when there is an error in cell division following meiosis or mitosis.  

Lost wax casting is the process by which a duplicate metal sculpture is cast from an original wax sculpture. The temperamental beauty of this process is what fascinates me. The idea of duplication and one form filling the void of a lost form, to make an entirely new complete form.. emulates and mimics the principal and multiplication of the human cell. The cell manifests by a form of duplication. It then divides into two new cells by a process called mitosis. Each new cell gets a complete copy of all the DNA, bundled up as 46 chromosomes.

The scientific examination of the crystal and it’s formation is known as crystallography. The process of crystal formation via mechanisms of crystal growth is called crystallisation or solidification.

The human cell, to grow and reproduce, traditionally needs a human host, a body, anatomically climatised to manifest, accumulate and duplicate. In this hypothetical climate studied, the crystal entity finds habitat within the human anatomy and this hybrid of cross-cellular species defies immortality. 

Deciding on the symbology of the finger - to represent universal human anatomy.. 

Form making with wax, I carved prototypes.. I considered which material was gesturally representative and sensitive and would translate the fleshy/ skin-like refinement well. Sacrificing the anatomically correct colour of the pink wax, I opted for porcelain - knowing it’s proficiency in capturing minute characteristic.

MATERIALS - Porcelain clay slip, plaster of paris, ethically sourced apophyllite crystals and clear quartz crystal clusters, pyrite specimens, resin skull anatomy model, false resin tooth implants, recycled animal bone, sterling silver, brass, polystyrene, epoxy resin.

 

…THE FINAL INSTALLATION ARRANGED - LIKE A GRAVEYARD OF ANNIHILATED MATTER - TO FURTHER ENHANCE THE COLLECTIVE SILHOUETTE + IDEA OF FORM + CELL MULTIPLICATION. THE IDEA OF “SEEING DOUBLES”.

THE INSTALLATION TOOK PLACE AT REAL JOB STUDIOS, AS PART OF A COLLECTIVE ARTIST INSTALLATION IN EAST BRUNSWICK.
